The Darkness #115 - The Age of Reason, Part Two

"THE AGE OF REASON," Part Two! Hope Estacado is very much her father's daughter. But Jackie Estacado was raised to be a hired killer for a crime family before he inherited the curse of the Darkness. As she matures to take care of her mentally unstable mother, what terrible rites of passage await Hope?

Cover & Solicit 3/5

The solicits makes it seem like the issue is about Hope, but it's actually a continuation from last issue with Jackie fighting against his dark half and The Foreigner and you see little of Hope until the final pages. The cover for this issue is excellently drawn by Jeremy Haun who also provided the interior art. As for what's portrayed on the cover, I'm not sure who or what its trying to portray, as none of it is in the issue.

Art, Colors & Inking 3/5

I don't have much bad to say about the art in this issue. Jeremy does a great job drawing the characters and the world they live in. The Darkness and the new Darklings have a very creepy and demonic vibe to them. If I had a gripe it seems like sometimes the art doesn't seem clean and smooth. I know this is normally the style used for The Darkness and I think it has more to do with the inking than the actual art. John Rauch does the colors for the title and are an excellent compliment to Jeremy's art.. I feel he doesn't try to over darken the imagery with blacks and deep tones making the title easily readable.

Layout & Flow 4/5

It's been years since I read The Darkness and decided to pick up issue #114 to get up to speed. In that issue they did provide a little back story and made it a little easier to jump in. If you are just picking up The Darkness for the first time I'd highly suggest picking that issue up first. Another point to mention in #114 they also provided a nice timeline to get you up to date on the basics. Some might argue that the events happened too quickly, or how the outcome seemed simple or rushed. I didn't see it that way. Being this is the second part of the story arc it did a good job of telling the story and leading into next issues conclusion.

Story 5/5

The issue was written by David Hine, who does a great job of telling the story. In this issue we see what happens after The Foreigner takes control of The Darkness from last issue. Instead of giving it back to Jackie he tells him he is not worthy, and that he wasted his gifts and just created mediocre Darklings. Showing the power of what The Darkness can really do The Foreigner summons demonic creations of his own. We get a great battle and dialogue between Jackie, Evil Jackie and The Foreigner. But when Jackie reminds The Foreigner what type of man he used to be he eventually releases The Darkness back to Jackie, but at a price. I won't give that away you'll have to read the issue to find out. It will be fun to see where the next issue takes us with the events that transpired from Jackie getting the powers back, and the small twist at the end where Jenny seems to know something more is going on. Since I haven't read the comic in quite I'm not sure who the lady and the men are at the end or how they relate to The Darkness and Jackie. Hopefully next issue will shed some light on them. I can't wait for the Conclusion of The Age of Reason next month. I definitely recommend picking up both issues #114 and #115 so you can be prepared for the fallout that happens in #116.
