Red Lanterns #26 - Red. Dead.
A RED WILL BE DEAD! It’s Guy Gardner and five Red Lanterns on their first mission in Sector 2814—a planetary army a billion strong, led by the evil fascist dictator Field Marshal Gensui. How can they all possibly survive? In fact, not all of them do!
They Came as Liberators... How's That Working Out?
The Red Lanterns are easily pacified when Gensui uses a ray on them that scrambles their thoughts. The warlord also turns the Dyson sphere surrounding his world into a literal Death Star, which he uses to try to take out Zilius Zox on Barg’s old ship. As the Lanterns are about to be executed, Ratchet manages to break through the pacification field, saving the other Red Lanterns from the firing squad. They make short work of their enemies, and Bleez brutally murders Gensui. Ratchet unfortunately succumbs to his wounds. Meanwhile, after killing a massive new Red Lantern, Atrocitus finally gets a red ring of his own again.
Not a bad story, as it nicely wrapped up the last issue. Sure, there’s the backstory of Atrocitus keeping the hooks intact, but for the most part, we’re getting shorter stories rather than events now, which is always welcome. Gensui researching his foes well in advance was very cool, though not flawless; I liked how Barg pointed this out to him. Even the most studied minds sometimes need even the most simple methods laid out on the carpet. Ratchet’s death was a shame, but it still fit the context. What really made it work was that he explained that he was going to lose his red ring soon anyway, as he just wasn’t filled with the rage that originally brought him into the Red Lantern Corps.
